HSR Free Characters: Who Should You Build First?
Honkai: Star Rail hands out 10 guaranteed free characters tied to the main story, no gacha luck needed: the Trailblazer, March 7th, Dan Heng, Asta, Natasha, Herta, Serval, Qingque (unlocked at Trailblaze Level 21), Yukong, and Dr. Ratio (the only 5-star character given away for free, sent by in-game mail right after you finish the prologue quest - check Menu → Mailbox so you don't miss it). The Trailblazer stands out because a single character can switch between several Paths over the course of the story. Early on, prioritize building Natasha (cheap early healing), Herta or Asta (wide area-of-effect clearing) and the Preservation Trailblazer (tanky, hard to kill) before swapping in gacha characters once you pull someone who clearly outperforms in a role your team is missing.
The full list of guaranteed free characters
Unlike most characters who require some gacha luck, Honkai: Star Rail hands you a whole roster of characters for free, tied directly to the main story, so almost anyone who plays through the quests will end up with them. The Trailblazer is the very first one - you pick their gender (Caelus or Stelle) - and you get them right after finishing the game's opening quest. March 7th and Dan Heng auto-join your team during the "Eye of the Storm" quest on Jarilo-VI, no extra steps needed. Asta is a 4-star character guaranteed in the game's very first beginner banner, essentially free from minute one.
The standout here is Dr. Ratio - the only 5-star character ever given away completely free, no gacha required. Right after you finish the prologue quest, the game sends Dr. Ratio to you through in-game mail, but because it's a mailbox reward, a lot of new players miss it entirely. Go to Menu → Mail to claim it.
Natasha joins after completing the "Lying in Rust" quest, while Herta shows up after you defeat the big boss in the "Lingering Shadows" quest and then finish the follow-up quest that unlocks the Simulated Universe, called "Simulated Universe: First Closed Beta." Serval used to be a mail giveaway for new players right at the game's launch, so if your account was created later, double-check your mailbox and the early-game event quests to see if you can still claim her.
The two free characters that take a bit more playtime to unlock are Qingque and Yukong. Qingque becomes available once your account reaches Trailblaze Level 21 and you clear floor 3 of the Forgotten Hall, a challenge arena mode. Yukong unlocks after completing the main quest "A Dragon Gallant, Its Ocean Distant" on Xianzhou Luofu and clearing floor 1 of the Xianzhou branch in the Forgotten Hall.
The Trailblazer: one character, several free "jobs"
The Trailblazer is the most unique case among the free characters, since it's the only one that can switch Paths (essentially its combat "job") without pulling a single extra copy on the gacha. Think of it like an employee picking up a new qualification on the job without the company having to hire anyone new - same character, completely different role.
The Destruction Path (physical attacker) is available right from the start. The Preservation Path (Fire element, focused on defense and protecting allies) opens up during your journey on Jarilo-VI. The Harmony Path (Imaginary element, all about buffing the team) officially unlocks at the end of the Penacony story arc, though you can also get it earlier through a permanent event as long as you already have Preservation unlocked. A fourth Path opens up once you finish the entire main story all the way to Amphoreus. Once everything's unlocked, you can freely switch between Paths from the character screen at any time, at no extra cost.
Which free character should you build first
Don't try to build all 10 of them at once - you'll burn through materials and none of them will end up strong enough. The most practical approach is to look at what your team is missing and fill that exact gap with the right free character.
Natasha should always be your first investment since she's a cheap healer with easy-to-farm materials, keeping you alive through the early game before you have anything powerful. Herta or Asta are great picks right after that, since their wide area-of-effect damage clears trash mobs fast, making story content and the Simulated Universe way less of a grind. If your team lacks someone to tank hits, the Preservation Trailblazer is the safest choice - extremely tanky, hard to kill, and able to soak damage for the whole team.
If you haven't pulled a solid main DPS yet, Serval or Qingque can absolutely carry the damage-dealing role early on - Qingque especially gets stronger the more Eidolons she has, and since she's free, it's much easier to stack copies of her than a gacha character.
When to stop investing in free characters and switch to gacha ones
Leveling up, raising Eidolons, and unlocking skills for free characters use the exact same materials and Stellar Jade as gacha characters - there's no cheaper build path just because they're free. So don't dump all your resources into them purely because they cost nothing; treat them as a temporary fix for a gap in your team until you get a gacha character that actually fits that role.
The right time to switch over to a gacha character is when you pull someone clearly stronger for that exact slot (say, a great 5-star DPS while you've been using Serval for damage), or when your free character has hit its build ceiling and still can't clear tough content like the higher floors of the Forgotten Hall. There's no need to rush to drop a free character the moment you pull someone new - if the new pull isn't actually better, just stick with the free one and save yourself the material cost of rebuilding from scratch.
FAQ
Are free characters as strong as 5-star gacha characters?
Most free characters are 4-star rarity (the Trailblazer being the exception, built to match the main story's pace), so their power ceiling is usually lower than a top-tier fully-built 5-star. But because free characters are much easier to get multiple Eidolon copies of than gacha ones, they can comfortably carry your team through the early and mid game, and some remain useful all the way into the late game if built for the right role.
What if I missed Serval's giveaway or other beginner rewards?
First, check the in-game Mailbox and the early-game event quests closely, since some character giveaways stay claimable for quite a while after launch. If your account was created too late and the promotion has expired, you can still get that character through regular gacha pulls, or simply use a different free character in a similar role instead - none of the free characters are mandatory to keep progressing through the story.
Does building free characters cost Stellar Jade?
No. Leveling up, unlocking skills, and raising Eidolons for free characters use credits and materials farmed in-game, exactly like building gacha characters. Stellar Jade is only spent on pulling for new characters or Light Cones on banners, so building the free characters you already own won't touch your Stellar Jade at all.
